The president circumvented the law to name an acting director who wants to hobble it.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has made good on its mission:

  • It has returned nearly $12 billion directly to people who were cheated by banks, credit card companies and student lenders.
  • It has handled more than 1 million consumer complaints, allowing people to quickly and easily resolve disputes with their banks.
  • It has directly helped 29 million people — and it has helped millions more by creating new rules for mortgages, credit cards, checking accounts, prepaid cards and payday loans, and by making markets fairer.
